Magnum812 : Where do I put the file and do I get it to run? AFL GeneS : When you download the file, if you haven't changed your AOL software settings, it should unstuff automatically at log off. Otherwise, select the file in the Open dialog box (in the File menu) then open the file, and it'll expand. Magnum812 : When I try to open it says "the application program that created it cant be found". what dose this mean AFL GeneS : You don't double click on the file. You select it in the Open dialog box in your AOL software. That message means you don't have the software that created that file, but this alternative will work. Magnum812 : The file is a screen saver AFL GeneS : Well, that's how you expand it. Once you do that, you ought to have a text file with it that explains how it's to be used. Jamielaw : it won't copy the files from quicken I didn't get a systems disk. All I got was a Utilities disk. Everything else was loaded already AFL GeneS : Jamie: You have a Performa right? PeteBoulay : OK bear...I downloaded system 6.08 tonight and did everything it said to do not the mega-file file brought it down--used diskcopy -threw it on appropriately new floppies... and was told that the utilities 1 disk didn't have the right info on it AFL Bear : After you made the floppies from the disk image files did you lock the floppies before using them? PeteBoulay : uh...no but they transferred into files AFL Bear : Let me explain.. This is good info for everyone who works with installers and floppies. Often the installer scripts check the modification dates on the files and/or the disk to verify the right software is in place.. An unlocked floppy can easily have the mod dates changed on them, thereby causing the installer to complain. Try making the Utilities 1 disk again, and lock the floppy, and I bet your trouble is gone. Something happened to change the Utilities 1. I've seen this happen many times, especially when I was doing support with Apple. Does that info help, Pete, about the disks? That was a looooooong time ago... :) AFL Bear : Jorn. You want to make a net installable System 7, eh? Make a folder called something like "Net Installs" on your drive, then drag a copy of each floppy icon JornEmon : Not for a network, just yet. I'd just like to make a boot-able optical for emergencies., AFL Bear : to that folder. When you're done, all you have to do is launch the installer from inside the first folder called Install. :) Net Install really means installed from a mountable volume. JornEmon : It wont ask for the individual floppies? AFL Bear : It could be networked, or attached. Nope. JornEmon : Very cool... thanx. AFL Bear : It will see folders with the same names as the floppies, and will work. There is a FAQ in MOS... about this. You can look there for detailed instructions. JULIE B 72 : id like to review opinions of compression routine pros=cons ie disk doubler v. stuffit v. compact pro in specific now.. I just learned of Aladdin╒s enhance for a file handler where you can see into their compressed archives AFA Pieter : Well DD and SD do much the same thing. They both are excellent at file level compression JULIE B 72 : there is a cost to this its commercial but though I use dd now / and like copy doubt a lot, aol lost my address book because it was compressed this is a drag and happens all the time AFA Pieter : AOL does not deal well with it own data files being compressed. ga AFC PeterS : I'm using AutoDoubler, and I have my AOL data files excluded and the application compressed with AIC. AFC Carey : Correction, AOL does not deal at ALL with its data files being compressed. Go into the AD control panel and exclude the AOL folder. AFA Pieter : That╒s what I had to do. GA JULIE B 72 : if anyone has a combination they like or can recommend a discussion string id like to resolve this I only have 80 Meg HD. AFC Carey : If you don't exclude the AOL files, you will continue to have the problem, with DD or SD, as far as I know, Julie. JULIE B 72 : yes I can work the control panel/just don╒t know what needs protection until it balks AFC PeterS : You don't have to exclude the whole AOL folder, only the Online Files and Online Tools. JULIE B 72 : ???? one more thing is there a util or file handler that can view those archives compressed that you know of I mean dd's AFC PeterS : Well, DD 4.0 let's you, sort of. I╒m not sure exactly what you mean; reading text files in... compressed archives? AFA Pieter : Not yet, but I would assume that they are addressing the situation. CZygmont : I have heard that AutoCAD will take over a computer, at least an IBM type. AFL Bear : Some programs bypass the Apple toolbox to make FPU calls by calling the hardware directly. This is an Apple no-no, and bound to break on new CPUs. ga AFA Pieter : Well have you looked at Vellum or the other new CAD programs that are native on the PowerMac? Khag : AutoCad is not favorite, but I exist with a few others in an ocean of PC engineers who use Acad, with whom I must exchange files AFA Pieter : I am pretty sure that Vellum and the other CAD programs will exchange files with AutoCad Khag : Come on! I need help :) AFL Bear : What we're saying here, Khag...is that there is no help to be had, except from AutoDesk.. AFA Pieter : I would suggest that you call Ashlar and other makers of CAD packages Khag : Suggestions! Creativity by OS geniuses! AFL Bear : cuz I'm 99% sure they are calling the hardware directly.... and there is NO software fix for that except in the application. I know a lot of the ACAD programmers. JULIE B 72 : OK aargh I keep complaining about this...... I just looked it up again called MACRO MAKER was apple supplied keystroke macro sys 6 had AFL Bear : They're wrong, then Julie. It was sold to Go, and I'm not sure if they are still selling it or not. JULIE B 72 : mac bible reports 7.1 has not got it and it doesn╒t work with it I feel I have a right to this AFL Bear : Julie - get QuicKeys - you'll be a lot happier. JULIE B 72 : you guys I know don╒t work for them, but my opinion is back to six until I can avoid having to use all those nice features in 7 in an iterative way but that╒s actually not true/ I just have to bite the bullet and buy apple script sorry yeh I╒m done CZygmont : Do you think the next version of System 7, 7.5, 7.7, 8, whatever, should be an interface overhaul? AFC PeterS : As for the interface overhaul, most of the mods planned for 7.5 and 8.0 appear to be more internal than interface, although QDGX will change quite a few things. CZygmont : Do you think Sys 7 needs one to keep fresh/up (like it needs to) with Windoze? AFL Bear : Hold a second, too, Julie, and we'll deal with your question in detail. A little slow. Not too bad, though. Yes, CZ, they need to keep the OS moving ahead or they will lose out. It won't matter if they call it System 7 or a pancake, but the need to advance will be constant. CZygmont : I certainly wouldn't want that to happen!! AFL Bear : Interoperability will be a keyword, too. AFC PeterS : Agreed. There are some iffy interface items that need real sprucing. Printing is about to be fixed with drag-n-drop printing instead of the chooser. That's one small but important example. AFA Pieter : Just remember MS is working long and hard at cloning System 6 in the form of Chicago CZygmont : System 6 or 7? AFL Bear : Nice analogy, Pieter. I have a flash bulletin from Apple! Where is System Update 3.0? System Update 3.0 has not been released yet, contrary to the MacWeek article of AFA Pieter : Not on Applelink last I checked ;) AFL Bear : 05.02.94. System Update 3.0 will be posted here as soon as it is available, hopefully within the next week. Flight T : Why did Apple discontinue the Power CD? GA TishTash : ! There is currently no upgrade, in fact, it's probably an end-stage line. The acceptance of the machine was overestimated by Apple. JULIE B 72 : this is not a new version as 7.0 to 7.1 to 7.5 but like 7.1.3?? AFC PeterS : No, it won't change the System version. AFL Bear : Julie, I don't expect will increment the version number of the OS, but may contain some updated parts of the System Software. JULIE B 72 : will folks down load the update on-line? AFC PeterS : Just as with System update 2.0.1 and Hardware System Update 1.0, it's an add-on.
